Statistics and Results Terminology

Exam

A set of Items that are presented to Candidates. Also known as test, quiz or survey.

Instance

A sequence of Items on an Exam. An exam can have up to 10 Instances which present different permutations of the same Items of the Exam. Each Instance is composed of the same Sections containing the same Items. The Section sequence is fixed, however the Item sequence within the Sections can be of different sequence. Also known as Exam Forms.

Base Instance

The primary or default Instance of the Exam.

Section

A logical grouping or collection of Items on the Exam. CE aggregates statistics for all Items in a Section. Also known as subtest or subscale.

Item

The Item is the question presented to the Candidate. CE supports two main types of Items. Multiple Choice or Essay. Multiple Choice Items Multiple Choice Items are Items that have a fixed lists of Options that the candidate is selecting from. Each option can be flagged as being correct or incorrect. Each option can have a value set for responding to it. Also known as MCQ.

Dichotomous Items

Dichotomous Items are a special type of Multiple Choice type Items where there is only one correct option worth 1 point and all other options are not correct and are worth 0 points.

Constructed Response / Essay Items

Essay Items are Items that are typically human rated or marked. These Items rely on a value being entered into the system to award points to the Candidate. The points awarded are from a maximum point value set for the Item. Also known as constructed response or human rated.

Item Group

A logical grouping of Items in the Item bank. When these items are added to an Exam, they are kept together on the Exam. CE aggregates statistics for all Items in an Item Group. Also known as Case, Grouping, Set or Scenario.

Competency

Competency is a meta attribute of the Item. CE aggregates statistics for all Items that have the same Competency value. CE also rolls up all of the Statistics of Competencies to their base Competency. Example: A-1, A-2-1, A-3 roll up to Competency “A”. Also known as Category.

Candidate

A Candidate is a unique person in the system. Demographic information (name, age, gender, ethnicity) can optionally be stored with the Candidate. A Candidate can be registered to take a particular session of an Exam. Also known as student or examinee.

Registration

A Registration is an occurrence of a Candidate taking a Session of an Exam. A Candidate can be a registrant multiple times for a Session of an Exam.

Session

A Session is a logical grouping of Registrations for an Exam. A Session can be logically split based on location, Client code or date/time stamp.
