The Item Edit Text Edit page allows the user the ability to Edit the Title and Text of the Item along with setting which options are correct and the point values associated with them. Once changes are made the user can click the Save button in the bottom right hand corner to commit changes to the database and close the Tet Edit page. Click Cancel button to undo all edits and close the Text Edit page.

Note: Though edits are preserved in memory on this page so that the user can edit the stem than options, the changes are not committed to the database until the Save button is clicked.

Editing Text and Options

Editing text is done by using the rich text editor (in yellow). To start editing, click on the editor which will then display the editor tool bars. Clcik for more on Rich Text Editor.

Th Item itself is comprised of a stem (generally the question) and a set of options (each of the possible answers to the Item question text). To select the stem or one of the options to edit, click the respective node in the Select item Element tree (in orange).

Options

When editing Item Options, there are additional controls (in pink) exposed to modify the value for the option, whether it can scramble or is a distractor.

FieldDescription
ValueThe points awarded to a registrant for selecting this option. The value can be a decimal number. it can be worth 0 points. it can also be a negative value to penalize Registrant for guessing.
CorrectIndicates the option is correct. All QtyCorrect type stats are based on whether the option is correct or not. Even if an option has a value, it is not considered correct unless it is flagged as correct.
ScrambleFuture use for option scrambling.
DistractorInformational in that it does not affect calculations. Of value to users who specifically want to track the outcome of a single option.

Is Dichotomous?

The Is Dichotomous? checkbox (in purple) controls whether the item is Dichotomous. Dichotomous items can only have 1 correct option worth 1 point and all other options are incorrect and worth 0. Checking the Is Dichotomous? checkbox means that when any option is flagged as correct it automatically sets the value to 1 point and all other options become incorrect and their value is set to 0 points. For Likert scaled Items, make sure Is Dichotomous? is unchecked so that each option can have its own value and correct/incorrect state.

Text Preview

The user can show/hide the Item preview which displays the Item stem and option text formatted. It also displays any linked or embedded Attachment images. This area can be shown or hidden to save on screen real estate by using the Show/Hide Preview check box (in blue). The user can also refresh the preview display by clicking the Refresh Preview button.

Track Changes

Item Writing supports a Track Changes feature that uses additional markup to highlight areas of changed text on the Item or Option text. This additional markup is preserved with the Item text until such time as the changes are accepted. Only systems with the track Changes functionality implemented have these options available.

In screen shot above, the stem text of the Item has Track Changes mark up. Once the changes are accepted (using the Accept Changes button (in green) the additional mark up is removed.
